This is what the 'perfect woman' looks like in 18 countries around the world
FROM obese to worryingly underweight, a model is Photoshopped across five continents and the results are fascinating.
BEAUTY: The ideal woman differs from country to country
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but where you live also seems to play a part – as this experiment demonstrates.
An online doctor's surgery asked 18 designers across the globe to Photoshop a woman in her underwear to reflect the ideal body in their country.
And while Spain's entry was the most curvaceous, China's was so thin (with a BMI of just 17) she would be considered below anorexic threshold.
STANDARD: Designers from all over the world were sent this photo
Italy's retouched picture was the second smallest, with an estimated weights of 7st 7lb and Body Mass Index of 18, based on the assumption that the model was 5ft 4ins.
The UK opted for a curvy woman with big boobs and a flat stomach, while the USA went for over-exaggerated Kim-Kardashian curves.
PHOTOSHOPPED: China and Italy submitted the thinnest women, while Spain was the largest
After Spain, Romania, Venezuela and Columbia were the most curvy and they edited their women the least.
While Mexico Photoshopped their scantily clad lady into an extreme hourglass, with nipped-in waist and large breasts.
Egypt also favoured the voluptuous look, but had one of the smallest waists.
BMI: The estimated weight and BMIS of the 18 submissions
The pictures show how perfection varies dramatically around the world.
Writing on the Online Doctors website, which held the experiment, the medics involved said: "Widely held perceptions of beauty and perfection can have a deep and lasting cultural impact on both women and men.
"The goal of this project is to better understand potentially unrealistic standards of beauty and to see how such pressures vary around the world.
"As you can see, our designers’ changes made some of these images almost unrecognisable compared with the original photo.
"While some remained largely similar with the exception of slight slimming, others resemble a new woman altogether.
"Drastic changes in hair colour, attire, and waist-to-hip ratio were common."
CURVY: Egypt and the USA went for extreme hourglass figures
Some designers in North, South, and Central American countries produced an exaggerated hourglass figure.
While those in European and Asian countries tended to go for more slender figures and some were even considered dangerously thin.
VOLUPTUOUS: Romania, Venezuela and Columbia produced some of the curviest women
Adults with anorexia generally have a BMI below 17.5 according to the NHS. And China and Italy's submissions came in below this.
Interestingly Spain produced the heaviest woman weighing in at roughly 10st 9lbs,
The company are now planning on doing a similar experiments using male models.
